Regulations of Course Requirements for

Postgraduate (MA) Programs for Working Professionals

The Department of Asia-Pacific Industrial and Business Management

National University of Kaohsiung

 

I. The regulations are in accordance with National University of Kaohsiung Regulations and National University of Kaohsiung Regulations of Credit Exemption.

II. Study period: 2-6 years.

III.Research areas: Industrial Management, Business Management, and Asia-Pacific Business Administration and Management.

IV.A minimum of 39 credits (including 3 for dissertation) are required for graduation: 13 for compulsory courses (including 3 for dissertation) and at least 18 for optional courses offered by the Department.

V. A Master’s degree is granted based on the completion of required credits, dissertation writing, and a successful viva.

VI.Pass mark: 70.

VII.Compulsory courses:

1.  Seminar and Special Topics (4 credits in total: 2 for each course)

2.  Methodology and Asia-Pacific Business Management (6 credits in total: 3 for each course)

VIII.Optional courses must be approved by either supervisors or tutors.

IX.Students are required to consult with the full-time faculty of the Department for an appropriate supervisor. If co-supervision is needed, one of the supervisors must be a full-time faculty member of the Department.

X.Students are required to choose their supervisor before the end of the second week of the first semester of their second year (see Appendix I for the Supervisor Application Form). The dissertation topic should be approved by their supervisor and the Chair before the end of the final exam week of the first semester of their second year and sent to the departmental office for filing.

XI.The change of topic and writing of dissertation shall be guided by supervisors. Request for change of supervisor(s) must be submitted before the end of the second semester of the second year. Students must obtain the new supervisor’s written consent, notify the existing one, and ask for the Chair’s approval. Students can only request for change of supervisor(s) once.

XII.Credit exemption

1.  Students can apply for up to 6 credits of exemption (excluding Seminars and Special Topics) for postgraduate courses and those for working professionals (excluding credit-based ones) taken in other schools and other departments of the University before being registered with the Department.

2.  Students can apply for exemption of up to 1/3 of required credits needed to graduate (excluding Seminars and Special Topics) for postgraduate courses (including credit-based ones) taken in the Department before being formally admitted to the MA program of the Department.

3.  Students can apply for a waiver for management-related courses taken five years before being registered with the Department with a grade of at least 75. This must be approved by the Departmental Committee of Courses.

4.  Students can apply for a waiver for credit-based postgraduate courses taken in the UniversityExtension Education Center five years before being registered with the Department with a grade of at least 80 or a ranking which falls within the first 50% of total students taking the requested course(s). This must be approved by the Departmental Committee of Courses.

5.  In some circumstances, an examination may be necessary to see if a waiver can be granted.

  Any exceptional cases must be processed in the Departmental Committee of Courses.

XIII.The regulations will take effect after being approved in the Meeting of Departmental Affairs and passed in the Meeting of College Affairs and Meeting of Academic Affairs. The same procedure shall be followed if the regulations are to be amended.
